How to use the Search Pin in WikiCamps
What is the Search Pin?
The Search Pin lets you place a pin anywhere on the map and view by-the-road distances from that exact location, even if you’re not physically there. It’s a powerful tool for planning routes, exploring nearby sites, and estimating travel distances before you go.
How do I place a Search Pin?
There are three easy ways to set a Search Pin:
- Tap and hold on the map where you want the pin to go.
- Tap the pin button located left of the search bar on the Explore screen to drop a new pin.
- Use the pin icon when searching for a site, city, or town to place the pin directly at that location.
- Once placed, the pin stays on the map so you can explore around it.
What can I do with the Search Pin?
Measure distances: See by-the-road distances from the pin to any site or location.
Plan routes: Drop a pin at a town, rest stop, or waypoint to plan nearby stops before you start driving.
Search nearby: Use the pin as a reference to find campsites, points of interest, or services around that area.
Because the app behaves as if you were at the pin location, this is especially handy when planning travel far from your current location.
How do I move or remove a Search Pin?
To move a pin, tap and drag it to a new location on the map.
To remove it, tap the pin and select the remove option (this will clear the pin from the map).
Do filters and search work with the pin?
Yes. Active filters and searches will use the pin as the base location when showing results, helping you find sites closest to your chosen spot on the map instead of your current GPS location.
Tips for using the Search Pin
- Use it when planning long trips to visualise distances between towns or campsites.
- Try dropping a pin at the start of a national park or remote area to estimate distances to water, fuel, or rest areas.
- Combine filters with the pin to find specific site types (like free camps, amenities, or dog-friendly spots) near the pin.
